How To Make ScreenGrab Compaible with Firefox 8
ScreenGrab is one of the must have addon for Firefox if you are a web application developer or frequently need to take screenshots of webpages. This addon lets you save the webpage as an image file in your hard drive very easily just by right clicking on the webpage.
Unfortunately, this addon is compatible with up to Firefox 3.6 branches only. It gets automatically disabled if you upgraded your Firefox installation. However, I found a trick to make it work with Firefox 4 or later. I have successfully tested it with Firefox 9 beta and all previous versions.
Here are the steps that let you make ScreenGrab compatible with your Firefox:
- Download the ScreenGrab XPI file here. (Right Click and Save Target As)
- Open the XPI file using WinRAR and extract the contents in a folder. (The XPI file is nothing but a simple ZIP file)
- There must be a install.rdf file. Open it with a text editor like Notepad++.
- Find the line “<em:maxVersion>3.6.*</em:maxVersion>” around line number 24 and replace it with “<em:maxVersion>9.*</em:maxVersion>” and save it.
- Now ZIP all the files together that were extracted at step 2 including the modified install.rdf file. Make sure to save the compressed archive as ZIP file.
- Change the file extension from ZIP to XPI.
- Drag and Drop the XPI file on Firefox to install it. If you already have the plugin installed, the process will automatically upgrade the addon.
That’s all. Now restart the Firefox and you’ll see the screengrab icon at the Addon Bar. Or, you can just right click on the webpage to see the ScreenGrab options.
On OSX I run into issued with this error message: ”This add-on could not be installed because it appears to be corrupt.” To compress the plugin back into an xpi file the plugin directory has to be included. I used the following command from within the screengrab-0.96.3-fx/ folder: zip -r ../screengrab-0.96.3-fx.xpi *
