Affiliate Marketing Mistakes to Avoid
Many people who join affiliate programs end up making some very basic mistakes and so failing to earn any significant amount of money. If you are going to make money through an affiliate program, then you need to know what not to do.

One of the most basic mistakes is to believe that an affiliate program is going to make you rich and that it will do so without any work. In reality, it takes a lot of time and effort to earn a substantial profit from an affiliate program. You will only be paid small amount for each customer that you convince to buy the product you are promoting, and in order to attract even a single customer you will need to work hard to promote your product. You should make sure that you understand exactly how much you will earn before you join an affiliate program, and what you need to do in order to earn it. You might receive two cents for every person who clicks on your ad, for example, or you might receive ten cents, but only when someone who clicks the ad actually buys the product.
Choosing the wrong product to market is another serious mistake that many people make. They may choose to promote something that is of poor quality, or something which they have no interest in or which they do not understand. Many people pick a product because they have heard of someone making a lot of money marketing it as an affiliate, but this does not mean that everyone will be as successful. A good way to choose a product that you will be able to promote well is to look for something that you want to buy for yourself.
Choosing too many products or affiliate programs is another bad mistake. It is usually better to concentrate on one or a few similar products than to try to market a huge range of different items. Posting too many ads on a single page will put potential customers off, any trying to spread the word about ten different products will not be as effective as working on one great product.
Many people decide to create a website to attract people who will be interested in the product they are promoting. This can be a good idea, when they focus on creating good content with a few links to the product rather than making the website one larger advert. However, many affiliates make the mistake of believing that the site will attract people by itself. No one is going to find a site that is not itself being marketed. It is important to work on increasing the visibility and popularity of the website if enough people are going to come to it and see your ads.

You hit it right on the head when you say that too many people get into affiliate marketing thinking it is some kind of ‘get rich quick with no effort’ business. I have never met a successful affiliate who hasn’t put in a lot of time and hard work to get where they are. Some affiliates who got into the business in the early days (when the industry was just taking off) may have been able to quickly dominate certain niches, but that is very rare these days. People who get into the business expecting instant riches while working a few hours a week are in for a rude awakening. It takes a real commitment to build a successful affiliate marketing business.
